Many well intended people seek to reduce the church to fit their own agenda, understanding and disposition. Hence the true, but incomplete saying “the Church is mission.”  It is of course called to mission, to the service of others.  The Church is also the place of teaching and learning the word of God.  It is a place of safety and sanctuary.  We meet the psychological and emotional needs of our members. The Church is a place of healing.
While all the above are each essential to the nature and constitution of the church, there is one more that must be named.  The Church celebrates.
The Church celebrates the presence of God in the world.  We proclaim great mysteries, we act out the dramas of salvation in the sacraments.
We celebrate the death of Christ and the Resurrection of Christ.  We celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church.  We celebrate weddings, funerals, baptisms, confirmations, ordinations, sendings forth and leave takings.
During Holy Week come and celebrate the great mystery of Jesus betrayal, death and Resurrection.
